- Who are you?
- Pilar Cano, Type Designer.
- When did you join Dalton Maag?
- September 2010.
- Tell us about yourself
- I am a designer from Barcelona, now living in London. I have been lucky enough to live in both Finland and England, two very different places from where I come from. I enjoy travelling and discovering things about other cultures (the best part about it). I also like cooking, which can be another way of learning about others. My big passion, apart from type, is related to what I have being doing professionally. I started working as a book designer and am now a type designer; I love literature. I spend quite a bit of time reading, though not as much as I would like to.
- What prompted you to take your current role?
- I always had an interest in type. As a graphic design student my favourite subject was typography. A few years after graduating I wanted to find out more about the details of typefaces, which lead me to the University of Reading to do an MA in typeface design. So, I guess the short answer to this question is curiosity.
- What's your favourite part of your job?
- Starting a project - the experimenting process we go through while designing is really exciting. I also enjoy the research process, especially regarding non-Latins, when you find different ways of doing things, and ultimately different ways of thinking. It is fascinating. I also like talking to my colleagues. They all have different perspectives. It is very enriching.
- What's your Small Object of Design, and why?
- I love books. They are a nice object and one of the greatest inventions of humanity. Nothing has ever changed the world so radically as the spread of books. They can also be very beautiful pieces of design/art, from their binding to the layout, type, illustration, and photography. I like old books very much, but modern book binding has a lot to offer.
