Francesca Bolognini

Who are you?
Francesca Bolognini, Type Designer.
When did you join Dalton Maag?
January 2011.
Tell us about yourself
I am a type and graphic designer, who has been living in London since September 2008. In 2008 I completed a postgraduate Type and Media program at The Hague, in the Netherlands. Before that, I worked in Berlin as graphic designer, and before that, I studied graphic design in Politecnico di Milano. Sometimes I really need to escape from the computer so I like to take part to calligraphy classes - it's also a good way to meditate.
What prompted you to take your current role?
After a few years as a freelance typedesigner, I felt I needed a work place where I could learn and share knowledge with other professionals and skillful designers, like my colleagues here. I also liked the idea of being challenged by new and bigger tasks. At Dalton Maag we work with of many high profile companies, which is a great opportunity to take part in important projects. I really love my work and I feel really lucky to be doing something so special, and obscure in many peoples minds. Most people don't even know that type design exists as a profession, despite its product being everywhere that you look.
What's your favourite part of your job?
Certainly designing - I only know a few people who really like doing kerning! Also researching is a beautiful part of the job.
What's your Small Object of Design, and why?
The printing press probably, the best tool to test what we are doing...! After all, everything started from these beautiful machines, and the development of type is deeply related to the media it has been used and designed for. I also love letterpress and I always hope I will have more chances to use it.
