A lecture to accompany an exhibition of paper casts and photographs of the inscribed stones of Wales showing how, from about 400 to 700 AD carved Roman capital letterforms gave way to the manuscript forms of the great Insular Gospel books of Lindisfarne and Kells.
Peter Cartwright studied typography on Peter Burnhill’s innovative course at Stafford College. He worked as a typographer/book designer at Penguin Books under the watchful eye of Hans Schmoller. He was then Head of typography for twelve years at Stafford College. Currently, Peter is researching the history of letterforms with special interests in early Christian palaeography and epigraphy.
