Technical Services: Character Set Extension

Approach

Character set extension has to be approached with great care, particularly where non-standard glyphs are to be added to a font. Decisions on encoding and key positioning determine the ease by which additional characters can be accessed by the end-user of the font.

Languages

Where language coverage is added to a font we adhere to the current Unicode standard. This ensures fonts behave as expected in current and future Operating Systems and applications. Where it is necessary to resort to a custom encoding, our technical team will work closely with you to discuss the different approaches and the potential difficulties.

Typographic Support

Many glyphs which are simply stylistic alternatives of a standard character, such as small caps, don't have a Unicode encoding position - Unicode encodes characters, not glyphs. We can help you choose the right approach to allow the full set of glyphs to be accessible in all your applications, with ease in applications which support OpenType, and with flexibility in design applications.
