Font Logistics: Licensing and Legal

Dalton Maag understands that choosing the right font for a project can be challenging. You will of course need to consider both design and technical requirements, but equally important is licensing options and restrictions.

Basic Licensing

The most common form of licensing is when a font is purchased from our website. The basic licence covers installation up to five computers. Note however that the font licence is tied to the individual or organization who purchased it. This restricts the distribution of the fonts to the licensee. Third parties needing to use the font will have to purchase their own licence from our website.

Multi User Licence (MUL)

MULs apply if the font needs to be installed onto more than five computers at any one time. Our website allows you to buy a MUL online, but many foundries insist that a MUL is arranged over the phone. Large organizations will almost always need a MUL in order to cover their internal font usage. As with Basic Licensing, a MUL is tied to the licensee, with third parties having to purchase their own licence for the fonts they wish to use. All foundries apply a sliding scale to the cost of MUL: the larger the font licence, the smaller the price per individual user, with discounts of 90% being common for the largest sizes of MUL.

Dalton Maag also allows for a client to purchase MULs for their third party suppliers. However, this cannot be arranged online. This special scheme allows for easy and cost effective distribution of the fonts as part of a corporate identity.

Font Modifications

Sometimes a existing font needs to be modified to meet the client's requirements. This can involve design changes, language expansion, font format conversion, enhancing screen appearance etc. A font that is modified must be covered by a licence for the original version. The rights to this modified font remain with the original copyright holder. Dalton Maag has a unique agreement with Linotype that allows us to make legal modifications to fonts from the Linotype, ITC and Monotype libraries. We are also able to help you to put appropriate licensing in place.
