Web Embedding: Aller Font Family
This FAQ covers specific questions about using the Aller fonts on websites under the free licence. For more general guidance, see our Web Embedding FAQ.
- Can I just place the Aller font files on my website and link to them using @font-face CSS rules?
- No, we don't not permit the placing of our raw OpenType, TrueType, or PostScript font files on any web server where they would be served to, linked to, or accessible by those outside of the organization to whom the font files are licensed.
Desktop font files contain far more information than is needed for rendering on the web, so you should use more compact web-specific formats instead. You should ensure that:- The font files have been produced with "WebOnly" settings, making them unusable on desktop machines, and compact enough for the web.
- The total number of users of the font is within the number of users for which the organization holds a licence. We regard 1,000 unique website visitors per day as being equivalent to 1 standard desktop user for licensing purposes. The free Aller licence covers up to 25 desktop users.
- Which formats can I use to embed the Aller fonts in my website?
- The details of which formats are suitable, and the rationale behind the limits, can be found in our Web Embedding FAQ.
